Gor Mahia in Africa

Gor Mahia in the 1991 Africa Cup of Champions

Gor Mahia looked good on paper. They had just embarked on a recruitment drive thayt netted players like brilliant playmaker Felix Otieno, free scoring Tom Odhiambo, utility player Allan Odhiambo, Ethiopian Michael Teshome, Zairean Francis Kasinde,  and Fred Awichwho joined veterans like George Onyango “Fundi”, Tobias Ocholla and Paul Ochieng.

However the team had not gelled by the time they faced Highlanders of Zimbabwe which included several Zimbabwe internationals like Mercedez Sibanda. The opening leg was played at Nyayo stadium. Gor Mahia were disjointed and hardly created any chances. They won 1-0 thanks to a goal by Fred Awich, who was attempting to cross the ball from the left flank. In the return leg, Highlanders won 4-0, unceremoniously bundling Gor Mahia out of the tournament.
