Eric Ouma earns maiden stars call up

Eric Ouma’s impressive displays in recent league matches have earned the attention of the Harambee stars technical bench. He has been named to the provisional Harambee stars squad that will be play in a friendly match against Tanzania as they prepare for the 2017 ANC qualifier against Congo.

Also named to the squad are other Kogalo players: Boniface Oluoch, Musa Mohamed, and Francis Kahata

Five former Gor Mahia players have been named to the squad: David Owino, Ali Abondo, Anthony Akumu, Michael Olunga and Wycliffe Ochieng.

Also named are players who have been reported as potential transfer targets for Gor Mahia: Paul Were and Ovella Ochieng.

Harambee stars are all but out of the running but coach Stanley Okumbi says he is building for the future.

“We have to try and be competitive even as we look to cultivate a winning formula. For the friendlies, we will try out new players and formations so that we can be in a good position to win against the Republic of Congo,” said Okumbi to the Nation.

For Marcelo, its a significant achievement to be named to the national team while still in his teens. The future appears bright. But it is worth remembering that the landscape is full of players who were named to the national team at a young age but failed to fulfill their potential. For example in 2010, Kogalo’s youthful team that almost won the league had four young players in the national team: George Odhiambo, Kevin Omondi, Duncan Owiti and Ibrahim Kitawi. All looked very promising. Some rested on their laurels and stopped working hard. Some lost focus. Of these only Blackberry appears to have rekindled his career. It is now up to Ouma “Marcelo” to use his national team call up as motivation to work harder.

STARS PROVISIONAL SQUAD

Midfielders: Ismail Said Athman (Las Palmas), Johanna Omolo (Royal Antwerp), Joseph Mbugi (Posta Rangers), Anthony Akumu (Zesco United), Victor Wanyama (Southampton), Eric Johanna (Mathare United), Francis Kahata (Gor Mahia), Humphrey Mieno (Tusker FC), Ayub Timbe (Lierse SK), Ali Abondo (Ajax Capetown), Paul Were (Clubless), Clifford Miheso (AFC Leopards) and Ovella Ochieng (Kariobangi Sharks).

  • How does a clubless person get a call-up!! Anyway Harambee stars technical bench should stop hoodwinking the public. I have never seen a coach who lucks so much confidence that he chooses his squad based on public opinion. Okumbi et Musa are two individuals passing themselves as coaches but Congo match will expose them for who they really are.

  • Okumbi should take care of our players;hatutaki injuries earned on a lost cause.

  • Only two strikers there: Michael Olunga and Jesse Were. Why not call the Western Stima striker into action? He gave Kogallo a run for their money last Sunday.

@Jambita tiny…giving Gor a run for their money does not warrant a Harambee Stars call up.Players should solely be picked on merit and consistency…let him prove himself over a period of time, not 2/3 games. One tree does not make a forest!!

@Oswozo moziek whatever that ka- name stands for let it be. But you are very spot ON. That ka-guy Baron Whatever apart from running aimlessly with the ball without thinking; Tell me what other football skill does he posses?. Let this NONSENSE of recruiting or calling so and so simply because of “A FLASH IN THE PAN” performance stop forthwith and specifically with K’Ogalo.

AND I REPEAT LOUD AND CLEAR TO THE “MIDOMO BAGGY” OF THIS SITE; LET THE TB DO THEIR HOMEWORK WITHOUT UNDUE PRESSURE FROM THE FANS OR EC. LET THEM TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND BE APPRAISED FOR THEIR CHOICES. ALL YOUR SUGGESTIONS ARE MERE OPINIONS AND HOGWASH.

      • Did anyone say on this blog that the opinions they voice must be followed by the TB? Where did Marcelo prove himself and he is doing just fine? I have watched Baron play a number of games and he makes up for ‘what you consider lack of skills with grit and a never say attitude. So kindly don’t police people’s opinion on this blog. Just post your own opinion and tell us which are these skills that you know that Baron lacks!!! And oh! If my opinion is hogwash to you, that makes your opinion hogwash to me too including the above.

Basic football skills like positioning, timeliness and clinical thinking and not just running without thinking about your movement the Henry motego style.

  • Ogango Trailer your comments are very unwelcome and leave a sour taste in the mouth. So what if some guys like Baron Oketch,is it a crime if they voice that & would like him signed at GM or called to the national team? All opinions are valid & NO one expects the TB to follow or implement

  • Baron Oketch must be a prominent businessman who has bribed people here or maybe bewiched people to praise him sooo much. What he does can easily be done by Wafula Innocent if our philosophy is hit and run football;simply run with the ball at the wings and have quick feet to dribble?Wafula can do that.

    • @ moses how many games have you watched him play to make you reach such a certain conclusion? And not everyone lives in your world where you have to be bribed to say what you think.

If I’m Marcelo I mean Erick Ouma I wud not go to that camp bcos going there is just a waste of time. okumbi has called 4 no. 3(fullback) including that kenyan from abroad & calling ouma is just a PR xcesise to make pple think that he is visionary. The national tm does not require a coach but a tactician bcos players in the tm have bn with the best coaches who r beter than ukumbi & if he thinks that he is hired to coach then he shud resign. he shud have called 4strikers,4central defenders,3fulbacks,&6mid.

    • @michael, I think going to camp may benefit him giving him a chance to rub shoulders with some more experienced heads like Mugubi among others. May do wonders for his already impressive confidence levels. As for the many left backs called, I think this is a provisional squad that will be whittled down. If he is lucky to make the final squad, playing at that level will develop him further. Dont deny the lad his day in the sun. Every player always wants to don the national colours.

Take that village mentality back to your “THUR-MATE” and reason digitally. So uncivilized and full of LUOISM. You think this site is meant for the kind crap you post in your mother tongue as if K’Ogalo is solely for LUO only. Take that silliness to Kibera.

  • I may not understand some of the terms used to portray who a Luo is, but it seems to come out that a Luo is arrogant and Vulgar in language use and cannot be told anything or cannot be taught. He is not ready to listen to any other opinion that differs from his or hers. Some thing that is also said about the Luo is that he is principled and that is why they stand by what they know is right. To me pride is not arrogance nor fain language but in doing and standing for the right thing whatever the cost. This therefore nullifies any negativity that may be tagged to a Luo. Logically no one takes pride in negativity but for the right things. Let a Luo not forget the identity of being principled. Applied to a national level, this nation is yawning for people who can stand for it in doing right. If that is the Proud Principled Luo, so be it.
