Team Focused on Gabon task

Gor Mahia will not hold back on their slim 1-0 lead when they travel to Gabon to face US Bitam in the second leg of their preliminary round of the CAF Champions League this weekend.

“We are going there to play football. We will not sit back and defend our lead. We have the players who are capable of getting the result we want and we will not hold them back,” said assistant coach John Bobby Ogolla after the team’s last training session at City Stadium yesterday.

Bobby Williamson’s men leave for Libreville this morning knowing too well that a chance to make history beckons for them as they seek to become the first Kenyan side to get past the first hurdle in Africa’s most lucrative football tourney.

Against Bitam, Gor’s defence manned by the tough as nails Kenyan intentional David Owino, Musa Mohammed, Uganda Cranes Geoffrey Walusimbi and rookie Haron Shakava held firm, giving them an opportunity to get into the next round should they not concede again.

“Shakava played well but it was a learning moment for him. We are sure such games will give him more experience and confidence as we go forward,” said Ogolla.

Shakava recently acquired from relegated Kakamega Homeboyz was playing in his first competitive match for K’Ogallo. The lanky young defender took the place of experienced Ugandan centre back Israel Emuge but Ogolla was not willing to be drawn into explaining the circumstances which led to Emuge being kept on the substitutes bench.

“Emuge’s issues are for us as a team. The coach decides which players are best suited at every moment to play a particular match,” said the legendary former K’Ogallo sweeper.

The return leg fixture has come too soon for injured wingers Kevin Omondi and Joseph Wanyonyi both of whom missed the first leg and are certainly out of today’s trip to Gabon

Wanyonyi and Omondi have been undergoing treatment with the clubs physiotherapists as they struggle to be fit for the start of the domestic season.

Gor’s sole goal was a penalty scored by Ugandan striker Danny Serunkuma. Together with Rama Salim, Shaban Kenga, Jared Obwoge and fans favourite George ‘Blackberry’ Odhiambo, Sernkuma will again lead Gor’s search for goals on Saturday. The winner of the match will face Tunisian giants Esperance in the first round.

  • IN NEED OF YOUR HELP

This boy is called Martin Obila. He hails from Rongo in Migori County. Yesterday, Monday at around 7.30 pm, he sauntered into Kakamega High School armed with an admission letter and a result slip showing that he had been called to the national school after scoring 387 marks in the last year’s KCPE examinations at an institution called Siala primary.

He had trekked for two days from his home, since Sunday, to make it to Kakamega, a place and school he had never been to since he was born 16 years ago. He was exactly the way he appears in this photo. He covered that distance on empty stomach and in slippers.

He pleaded with the school to help him get admitted because he was a destitute but had the thirst for education that would eventually see him becoming a neurosurgeon.

The Principal Oliver Minishi was moved by the boy’s plight, offered him a place to sleep after having a meal. This morning, he was paraded on the school assembly where fellow students, also touched by his predicament, offered to contribute cash to help him get some shopping. They started from 0. However, Mr. Alex Wakhungu, the teacher who was sent to do that, says the less than Ksh. 10,000 that was raised was not enough. He only bought what could sustain the boy in school as they await any help from any Good Samaritan(s).

Martin is in dire need of help. He covered a distance of over 100 kilometres to reach the school of his dreams. He says whoever agrees to help him with school fees will never live to regret. Please if you are touched and feel you can help, kindly reach the school on 0723 830 135 and talk to Mr. Andati.

Thank you in advance and GOD bless.

Oboya is not injured, he is simply unfit , what is equally shocking is why did we renew his contract?

By the way how has Kogalo arrived to Gabon? We are praying and trusting God for victory.

They fly KQ to Kigali and connected via RwandAir to Lebreville in Gabon. Arrived safely in Gabon. They stayed overnight in Lebreville before traveling by road today to BiTAM which is a border town some 130 km to the northern side if Gabon and bordering Cameroon.

It is a border town infiltrated with cameroons, Congolese and Central African Republic refugees with a population of approximately 25000 people and are predominantly French speaking. Their stadium capacity is 7000 seater and K’Ogalo will have a training session on the pitch today.

The most notable observation is that Esperance of Tunisia have already sent their technical team to do some intelligence as they will attend and watch the match live from Bitam Stadium. That they are anticipating to play K’Ogalo in the next round is very REAL.

Due to lack of direct or indirect flight between KQ and Gabon , the trip has been very
expensive to our EC, each individual requires a return ticket in the range of 2000 USD per
    Person instead of 1000 USD.

K’Ogalo will fly back on Tuesday after qualifying to next round on an away goal rule.

Thanks, Jabilo. That was spot on.My only worry with the info above is that the team will travel back on Tue yet we have a crucial match on Wed at 3pm with City Stars who are at the moment enjoying ‘the best form with the former Gr players’even before the league starts according to their coach.
They seriously need a thorough betaing.Only then shall we be able to send a clear and terse warning to the others harbouring intentions of frustrating Gor Mahia’s title ambition this season.

I also believe we are likely to have a 2:1 scoreline enabling us to have a ticket to the next round.

I take this opportunity to urge Bwana BW & JBO to take bold steps and decisions in handling these continental matches, playing safe most times lead to near misses.
