Gor Mahia seek to wrap up title against SoNy

Gor Mahia could finally clinch the 2015 Sportpesa Kenya premier league on Wednesday when they take on SoNy Sugar at Nyayo stadium. Gor Mahia only needs a point against SoNy Sugar that will put them at 64 points, giving them an unassailable lead.

On November 7 when the trophy is presented, skipper Musa Mohamed will be holding aloft the league trophy, marking Gor Mahia’s third consecutive title which will allow them to keep the trophy for good. Musa Mohamed has made over 200 appearances for Gor Mahia having joined in 2010 and it is fitting that he would lift the trophy. In terms of years of service, he is second only to Jerim Onyango who lifted the trophy in 2014.

But SoNy Sugar will be in no mood to yield. Ever since they hired coach Salim Babu, they are a drastically improved side. Whereas they were once battling relegation, of late they have been putting distance between themselves and the relegation zone. Their recent 2-0 win over former title contenders Sofapaka is especially impressive and should serve as a warning to Gor Mahia in case complacency is kicking in.

Coach Babu tried to mimic Robert Matano by claiming it is Gor Mahia who are under pressure.

“We have prepared well and we are ready for the match. It’s a big game. We are aiming for positive result and that is why we have been training,” he said.

“We will not leave empty handed because they (Gor Mahia) are the ones under pressure. They will underrate us and that is when we will take our chances,” he said to the Nation.

The match kicks off at 1900hrs at Nyayo stadium. With this convenient time, fans should show up in droves to cheer the team. Coach Nuttall has urged fans to turn out in large numbers.

We look forward to playing our next opponents on Wednesday and I urge as many fans as possible to come and enjoy the match, Nuttal said to the club site.

Former SoNy Sugar and Gor Mahia coach Zedekiah Otieno “Zico” for his part  is sure that Gor Mahia will win.
“When I lost to Gor Mahia while still at Sony, I predicted that the former would go all the way and win the league unbeaten. We had a great team then and if they beat us, no one will stop them.”  he said to the Standard.

>Gor Mahia beat SoNy 1-0 in a tense match during the first leg thanks to a sublime free-kick from Ali Abondo who scored against the team of his youth.
This match also offers Meddie Kagere and Michael Olunga one of their last chances to catch up with Jesse Were of Tusker in the scorers log. However under coach Frank Nuttall, both players have proven unselfish and will readily set up a team-mate for a goal.
