Matano may join technical bench

From supersport.com

Gor Mahia has been linked with former AFC Leopards coach Robert Matano in a bid to beef up its technical bench.

Sources say that Matano, who also played for Gor’s archrivals will assist interim coach John Bobby Ogolla in trying to revive the club’s flagging fortunes this season.

If the move happens, it will reunite the two coaches who were at the helm when Sofapaka won its maiden title at its very first attempt in 2009.

It will be reversed roles though as at Sofapaka, Matano was head coach while Ogolla was his assistant.

Matano watched Gor’s training on Sunday and is set to officially start work on Monday.

The club sacked the entire technical bench led by coach Anaba Awono last week over poor results and placed Ogolla as coach on an interim basis.

Gor has lost its last four matches losing 3-0 and 1-0 to Mozambique’s Ferroviario in the Caf Confederations Cup and 1-0 to Muhoroni and Karuturi in the league. They are currently 13th on the log with just three points from three games.

Contacted for comment, Gor’s secretary general George Bwana refused to confirm or deny the reports.

“People come up with all sorts of rumours where Gor is concerned. There will always be all sorts of news regarding the club but as far as am concerned, its a rumour and if anything materializes then I will let you know.”

  • If he has been identified in conjunction with JBO then I support the move 100%. The problem with us is that there are so many armchair coaches just like @Kosero says. The moment we stop interfering and even proposing a line up for the coach that’s when we will go far. I know most fans are crying for a mzungu coach but what I know is that we cannot afford to pay the best of them. So therefore let’s set up the foundation and with time getting that mzungu coach will not be a hassle. Unless we are lucky to get a tourist/retiree like our shemejis we might be in a far worse situation. What I know about Matano is that he is a disciplinarian and that’s what some of our players need. What of some of them absconding training/matches on some flimsy reasons. We blamed AA for not being tough so Matano (tough disciplinarian) and JBO (tactical) is what I would advocate for. All this so long as it’s not some knee-jerk reaction a
or some desparate move. Otherwise I comment the EC for trying all their best to uplift our team. Somewhere along the way we will get the right chemistry/mix and be back where we belong. What nobody can say is when that will be. All the best to the GM community

  • If it’s true then why not? I have suggested this name before because he was a league winner at Sofapaka. Any coach who has won the league can win it again. It is upon us to support the technical bench or continue with what we know best of condemning and criticizing any positive move from the office.

AR and team we are behind you as you continue to find the best way out for our beloved club. Thanks for the good job.

A good employ works and do not need to bother who the manager is. Please this club has public interest, even if you dont like a headcoach you dont need to be rude or sabotage. It is high time we introduce performance contract. you joke around and you go home. we are not going to sack coaches because players are rude. am sure not all players are rude. This should be to players. we also work in our ofices and it is simple it is either you perform or go home and languish in poverty. We have seen commitment by muhoroni youth players despite low pay. Such are serious pple who want there career to develop. players must understand that any time they dnt perform and become indiscipline, its their career they are ruining. Fans will make noice, change coaches but go back to their offices and continue getting promotions coz of their hard work. If some players think playing for Gor was their only dream then its wrong. they should play well and even play in english premier league

  • @Osaka I meant what @Kosero tells us about the numerous ‘coaches’ and we blast him for that.
Sir Jerry please don’t let your name down. For us to get out of the village we must incorporate the best in the region. TP Mazembe has a good number of ambiana, UGs and TZ players and look at their performance. APR even had Brazilians. So tell us, do we have some mzungu out there with Kogallo blood?. Footy is now professional and it’s a source of earning for the people involved. For those who think we need a mzungu coach pls give us the names of those who you have in mind. Since I love GM i propose the following who are the best, afterall we need the best for GM. Fergie. Mourinho, Guardiola and their pay of 1 billion per year, 0.6 billion etc . Can we afford when even insurance for the players is not there? Let’s crawl first before we run. I know we used to have Mzungu coaches sometimes back but the pay wass from the individual chairmen. Do we want to go back when the club was run like personal property. To build GM we need to open up our minds for new ideas. We cannot do the same things we were doing in the ’60/’70s now and using the same tools. Let’s style up.

This is the best thing that I have heard about Kogallo in close to one year. Like, I wrote on my previous post, it appears the EC has let JBO to recruit his support staff. I rate Matano as one of the best coaches locally. He did wonders with Kenya Pipeline. He repeated the same with Sofapaka. I trust his experience and no nonsense approach, will add alot of value in our team. I have total confidence in this team. The issue of him not being a Kogallo loyalist is neither here nor there. I wonder what loyality-meter Sir Jerry is using to come up with such weird conclusions. Tuwache ukabila, let this guys do thier job. For God and my club Kogallo.

If it is true then let us respect Bobby’s decision and learn to live with it. EC gave JBO a free hand to pick someone he can work with cohesively and JBO said he would think about it. Well if he has thought about it and settled for Matano so be it.

Bobby knows more about Gor and he is more Gor than any of us. He wants the best for this team. Deep inside, he must be out to make another milestone in Gor: a successful manager. He was a successful player, a superb stopper, a legendary free-kick expert, a great captain with several silverware in the cabinet. If ‘Emperor’ Franz Backenbaur, Kalusha Bwalya, etc have done it, is it wrong for Bobby to dream? We can contribute to his dream by according him a very conducive environment that is bereft of any noise or unnecessary criticism.

Dream on rateng wuod Ogolla. The sky is the limit. We look forward to the day you or any Gor Mahia legend will be club chairman and rise even further to chair FKL like Job Omino.

I am surprised that Ghost can be compared with Matano yet the former is well known to be all talk, press and cameraphilic with very little to deliver on the pitch.

Matano was fired at AFC he is like a headmaster and not a coach.

  • It will cost us nothing to base our contributions on this blog on facts. Admin help us by weeding out comments of abusive nature. We know that having been fired has never made anyone a bad coach. Lest we forget JBO and Matano were also relieved of their jobs at Sofapaka. If you follow the history of coaching you will realise that you can be fired for a thousand reasons including not fielding the Chairman’s cousin or nephew. So guys let’s reason before we condemn.

Matano is a good coach and as someone has mentioned that he is like a “HEADMASTER” at times we need headmasters for schools to perform and that is why we have a disciplinary teacher. Try Matano and then we sit back and watch, believe me and prove me wrong, come the first leg you will be proud of K’ogalo. Discipline plus top team.

  • Koops is doing a good job at AFC let’s admit that, I fill we need a coach (and a good youth system) cause Ogolla is filling in on a temporary basis If a European is what we are looking for then can we afford to pay him. If Johan Neeskens can coach in South Africa (Mamelodi Sundowns F.C.) we can try and get one he does not have to be a high profile coach but should have a philosophy of how he wants his team to play football. The likes of Neeskens may be out of our budget but we can look at names such as Arnold Scholten (Dutch coach) and so on masters of total football that’s what we need at Gor Mahia.
