Nutall takes his first test against Simba

Gor Mahia travel to Dar es Salaam to play against Tanzanian giants, Simba sports club. On Thursday, Gor Mahia did play a friendly against Nakumatt that ended 1-1 with Timothy Otieno scoring Gor Mahia’s goal in the 25th minute before Nakumatt equalized in the 85th minute.

However Nutall had not held any training sessions prior to the Nakumatt match. But it did give him an opportunity to watch his charges in action. Simba will be his first opportunity to test his strategies. Fans will hope that he will inject new ideas that will see Gor Mahia play more cohesive football, something that has been lacking of late.

According to club Secretary General Chris Omondi, Tanzanian giants Simba S.C made a formal request for a friendly earlier on but that did not materialize given tight Kenyan league schedule. The match serves as good preparation as Gor Mahia prepare to take on Tusker in a crucial league encounter.

Gor Mahia skipper Jerim Onyango was happy at the chance to play Simba

“This weekend we do not have a league match so I think it will be good preparation for the game against Tusker when league action resumes. We want to give our all in the game come back with a win, he said during  Francis Nuttal’s press conference.

Simba finished an unaccustomed 4th in the Tanzanian league and thus fired coach Zdravko Logarusic replacing him with Zambian Patrick Phiri. They have also recently released former Gor Mahia defender Donald Mosoti who was initially a defensive mainstay there. But they will be buoyed by the return of their former striker Emmanuel Okwi who has rejoined after leaving arch rivals Yanga. Okwi has near legendary status among Simba fans. He is a dangerous striker and the Gor Mahia defence with Shakava, Calabar , Walusimbi et al will need to watch him.

September 2010 Friendly

Masika takes on the Simba striker

The last time Gor Mahia played Simba in a friendly was in September of 2010. The only surviving players from that match is Collins Okoth “Gattuso”, Musa Mohamed and Jerim Onyango. On that occassion, a very young Gor Mahia side comprehensively outplayed the Tanzanian giants beating them 3-1. It would have been higher if not for missed chances.

That day Gor Mahia scored first through Dan Makori in the 13th minute after being put through by Collins Okoth. Wycliff Opondo scored the second, tapping into an empty net. And before Simba could figure out what was hitting them Francis Ochola made it 3-0 from a brilliant pass by Baldwin Ngwa.

On that day, the Gor Mahia line-up was as follows

Ronnie Kagunzi, Solomon Nasio, Chris Wekesa, Eric Masika, Musa Mohamed, Anthony Akumu, Wycliffe Opondo (John Kiplangat 59?), Collins Okoth (Robert Onyango 85?), Baldwin Ngawa (Duncan Owiti 85?) Francis Ochola, Duncan Makori (Tonny Onyango 77?).
Reserves not used
Jerim Onyango, Francis Akang’o and Andrew Murunga
Charles Omondi was the acting coach.

The lack of creative players who create chances is the reason Gor Mahia are not scoring.

Perhaps the draw is good because it exposed the team’s weaknesses for the new coach to see and start mapping strategies for corrective action.

unless the new coach changes defending tactics after Gor scores then i dont see any good result.

For heaven sake why are Gor playing unit accepting dead minutes goals you hear Gor conceded on 85 minute, why are they not taking my advice TO secure the goals they score. this mistakes happened in Rwanda Cecafa and boys said they learned lessons, but to me they learned nothing OTHERWISE CONCEDING GOALS AT LAST MINUTE SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN THERE.

I can see some bloggers inciting players through there comments that EC to settle amount owed to players in terms of pecks but i have never heard that EC has received any funds recently and i wonder where is EC going to get funds from since the gate collections they depend on is not forthcoming coz TPL is on recess.

I WANT TO ASK THE PLAYERS TO UNDERSTAND THE CURRENT SITUATION AFFLICTING GOR and i belief EC is atleast settling the balances owed to players when the get gate collections.

OTHERWISE I READ SABOTAGE FROM PART OF PLAYERS AND I URGE THE EC TO PUSH OUT ALL SABOTOURS FROM GOR. is better we remain with 11 players than holding onto more 20 players who are locking the boat from inside.

I urge the new coach to install MUSA MOHAMMED as temporary captain assisted by Baba kizito .otherwise Jerry will push THE NEW COACH out of GOR. I dont think the players support Jerry full.

@David, I can see you doing exactly what you are accusing other people of doing. Choosing a Captain depends on so many factors and by the way players choose or elect their captains in some cases.

  • I think the reason our striking is blunt is bcos our main striker is out of form & thats y he has also bn dropped by Uganda. Let the truth be told.Danny Sserunkuma is out of form. All clubs in the world depends on their strikers to score goals & Gor is no xception. when did Danny score a league goal or a goal for Gor. He scored only 1 goal in CECAFA & in the 1st match & since then he has never scored. We cannot say that Otieno tim is also not scoring bcos he’s still raw in premier league unlike Ssebo.

No need to worry as all strikers all over the world undergo a goal drought. This happens to RVP, Messi etc. The issue is how long the drought is. This is a chance for the other players to provide the goals

Akumu is taken by Al Khartoumn at ksh 1.75 m on a permanent basis. Sawa hiyo.
Ombeng Ombeng you are asking why we sent away Dube, a skillful player(we did not sell)? Its “we” fans the last season he played for us we kept shouting and insulting him from the stands, the same way we are doing to Blackberry now, we did the same to Opondo of Thika!!!!!I wish the new coach could rediscover Blackbery.

same thing we did to Anguyo and might soon do to Jerry only to regret later. Even for TUZO we said they can go and that we are more than capable of financing the team!! If only we could think beyond that day before we comment or shout our thoughts from the stands. I thought what we have undergone since March this year should make us wiser.

sorry to say…for me dube is way over the hill.his body language and overall effort was far from impressive.i wouldnt take him back ever.
i think we have better players at the club who given the right environment can excel.

We lack creative players, serrunkuma can score over 30 goals a season if fed well with short through balls from outside or inside the 18 box,the lad thrives if well fed,he is not a good go getter, thats why minus Rama and Akumu, sserunkuma goals have been less.He is also very fast, and knows what to do with ball even before he gets the pass, classical example is our sofapaka second leg game at kasarani last year, not all strikers could have scored that goal.

@Oswozo Moziek that is exactly where Gor Mahia gets it wrong. We should not look at Odhis Dube in terms of his current form but rather as an asset whose vast experience is good for the future development of Gor Mahia. As a club we have done very well with knee jerk solutions to problems (some kind of management through crisis). We have no development plan, for if we had then that is where Odhis Dube could have featured very well.

Think for instance, of the Kinoru match against Brewkenge and last week when the club was coachless: Odhis Dube could have fitted in that position very well as player-coach instead of resorting to Ouna and I am sure the result in both matches would have been more favourable. The day we shall use and retain some of our best in the Tech Bench instead of discarding them will be the day Gor Mahia will start making baby steps towards sustainable development and growth.

Guys, how could gor have had a player without coaching experience take over when someone with some qualification is on the bench? Didn’t we see it with Sher Karuturi and we all know what happened. The best thing is for the club to encourage the senior players like Jerry to start getting some coaching certificates as it will help them later on in life.
