Olunga scores but Kenya lose to Zambia

Olunga scored his first senior national team goal

Gor Mahia striker Michael Olunga was on target, yet again living up to his promise when he scored a 12th minute goal to give Harambee stars a 1-0 lead over the Chipolopolo of Zambia. However Zambia would soon equalize and go ahead. The game ended 1-2 in favour of Zambia. It was dessapointment yet again for Harambee stars fans who turned out in very large numbers. It was the first time in several years that Nyayo stadium was filled almost to capacity of a Stars match. However the fans were in for disappointment.

It was Olunga’s first goal in a full international for the national team. He chased a long ball from full back Dennis Odhiambo and used his length to outreach the advancing Zambian goalkeeper for the first goal. Up to this point, Stars were the better side and deserved the lead. The Zambians would capitalize on defensive lapses that left Collins Mbesuma and with acres of free space with which to shoot.

Mbesuma was critical in the opening goal, holding off a Stars defender before laying off to Winstone Kalengo to score in the 30th minute.  Paul Were who had been lively on the flanks was injured and had to be replaced by Innocent Wafula who proved innefective.

Mbesuma would then score the second in the 44th minute when he was left unmarked and rifled home a low drive. It was Kalengo who returned the favour by providing an assist.  At halftime the large home crowd was in stunned silence while the handful of Zambians in the crowd out-shouted them.

Ayub Timbe who looked dangerous for much of the first half with his dazzling runs down the flanks was at it again in the second half.  But his crosses often went begging. Kennedy Mweene in the Zambia goal was outstanding, thwarting numerous Harambee stars attacks.

Coach Williamson rung more changes replacing Collins Okoth with Johanna Omollo to add more attacking impetus and bringing on Allan Wanga for the tiring Dennis Oliech. None of his substitutions proved effective.

In the second half, Zambia employed time wasting tactics with fake injuries much to the chagrin of the crowd. Zambia were not impressive either. They spent much of the second half in a defensive bunker with Kenya doing all the attacking. But Kenya’s porous defence did them huge favours.

After the match, both skipper Victor Wanyama and keeper Arnold Origi stated that they had let the large crowd down by playing poorly.

Coach Williamson will soon find himself in the hot seat. He has yet to record a convincing victory. His predecessor Adel Amrouche while not entirely effective, had a better track record  after a few matches.

“Our defenders definitely were not as precise as they should have and we did do very well as we did in Congo. I thought Dennis (Oliech] was my best pick to start rather than bring him later but obviously these guys could have played better than that but that’s just football. ” Said Williamson after the match.

With regard to the poor defending, many fans concurred that the Gor Mahia central defensive pairing of Shakava and Musa Mohamed would have been a better option than Olum and Mandela who both did not look match fit.

Paul Were’s early injury also wreaked havoc with Williamson’s plans
Were’s injury was a great blow to my plans since he could have played a greater role but we had to take him off and Noah came on wasn’t too effective. It is disappointing since the fans were fantastic turned up optimistic but we never gave them anything to go home happy about” said Williamson

Uselesss what did u expect of BW? I have never been his fan and never will.

Second..far too many out of form players on the pitch..surely wanga, were, mandela, origi , wanyama and oliech.this players should not have featured in this game.offcourse trust BW to come up with excuses e.g the infamous bigger budget theory. Useless

The downhill race starts earlier than I thought. So after this the nxt stage is the mathematics stage, this usually happens towards the end of the qualifiers. The coaches will tell us the usual ‘the boys played well’. You wonder why Kenyan players move like theyr half asleep in the pitch. Its a pity to try n assess what harambee stars were tryn to do. All that was visible was a stage where one player Ayub T. was tryn to show off. Whatever Wanyama was doing in that pitch remains a mystery. He never made even one meaningful pass to the strikers.
    1. How can it b that from the 35th minute Oliech never touches the ball again!
Actually even on the 2nd half by the 57th min he still had not touched the ball. Bobby as a person remains a gentleman but for his technics this guy needs to change or quit.
Congrats to Olunga, Owino, Wanga et Origi.

  • I said before Gor players and coaches do not perform after they leave the club. At Gor players play using adrenalin; they lack skill and are average at best. FKF, in future do not hire Gor coaches (atleast not head coach). There record means nothing. Trust me

But Ingwe has a former Gor Mahia reject. Double speak and keep this sheet to yourself and Ingwe site. You are really a busy body trying to frequent Gor Mahia site. Why can’t you post your cramps to Ingwe site? Why do you like like Gor Mahia site? Get lost you bastard.

If it was Jesse Were or Wanga starting instead of Olunga, we could have scored at least 3 goals. Olunga under performed just like Dawo used to under perform with Harambee but excel while at Gor

COMPRESSER: Glay left because of the FKF quota system. Keeping him on the bench was going to be costly for the team. At times it’s good to be mindfull of the player as well.

Am happy I ditched Bobby long time ago. Since the day he opted for H/Stars job, I knew that was a good riddance and I have no regrets for championing his premature exit from K’Ogalo although I also commend him for recommending Frank Nuttal as his successor. I hope NYAMWEYA will not start salivating for Nuttal now that H/Stars is slowly but steadily heading down the drain.

I can not allow myself to be affected by H/Stars cause NYAMWEYA and BW, how I wish they fail and fade very fast to reduce the agony and pain that most kenyans are undergoing at the moment. SORRY COMPRESSOR I WISH YOU QUICK WEIGHT RECOVERY THE SOONEST K’OGALO CAN RESUME KPL MATCHES.

Nope we don’t want any more coaches from Gor. Like I have said before, Gor players are driven by adrenaline. This makes the coach look good but in reality he is also average just like the players. Honestly speaking we need a Muhammed Kheri kind of coach

EIh Ingo, sometimes you post comments that make me wonder whether you have come straight from Shamakhokho where the air is polluted with bhang smoke or from Mundika having imbibed a little extra power alcohol from Mundika jaggery. What is all this obsession with Gor Mahia? Why don’t you use that negative energy to talk Efusi fans from disrupting football matches by throwing objects on the pitch? Yesterday they were at it again and now CAF will impose a hefty fine on Kenya. That fine should rightfully be paid by Efusi but unfortunately they are so broke. Ingo tell us something about the off-form Victor Wanyama or off-form Allan Wanga.

Kindly note that this person is more interested in the insults that spew out every time he makes a comment. Ingo is basically interested in insults. The more the insults the more he gets his fun. So why give him so much fodder? Do not turn Harambee stars into a tribal unit where Olunga is perceived to to score for his tribe and Wanga for his. Ingo just like Kuria and MugoWaWairimu have serious anti-Luo issues. Hitler hated Jews. He did his best to eliminate them from the world…did he succeed?
Accept that such ppl exist, accept and move on. Let him be.

    • You see, both Wanyama and Wanga do not believe in Omweri and such and that’s why they have done well unlike players from the lake side team who only perform well while playing for the lake side team. This fools national team coaches to call them only to find out that they are average players… I guess those omweri powers do not transfer to Harambee or any other club… Wanyama is the General of the team. Now, when he plays with the players who are not experienced like Olunga, then what do you expect? Wanga was brought in when the team was trailing and they were all nervous. What do you expect?

Ogango Trailer is right that the only good thing that BW ever did was to shop Frank Nuttal for K’Ogalo. Other than that I think the gentleman is better off working as a missionary. I think the Scottish Missionaries still operate in different parts of Kenya. Disappointment and pain can sometimes make one to wonder whether the Kenyan Constitution should allow for deportation of expatriates who fail to perform on national responsibilities assigned to them.

Ronald Koeman was right that Victor is not mentally and physically ready for any match. In the entire game Wanyama was sluggish and a far cry from what we know him for. While we blame Olum for giving Kalengo room to shoot the first goal, the second goal was even more comical. Victor failed to mark Mbesuma while Mandela was harassing Kalengo and then Olum turned his back as if to take cover from the on-coming shot as the unmarked Mbesuma fired. Upfront, one wonders why Jesse Were did not replace Oliech. Allan Wanga did admit just a few days to the match that he was fighting for match fitness. Talk of a clueless technical bench, but I sympathize with them because things started going wrong for them with Paul Were’s freak injury. BW is rignt that Paul Were’s injury messed them. Were’s replacement was awful and it is interesting that Zambia scored when that substitution was in the process. To me it looked like the central defence and midfield were concentrating more on who is replacing Were than on play.

Ayub Timbe is quite good but lack team work/he does everything alone. mandela should not have played at cheches expense. Ooooh wanyama is anather problem in harambee i wonder how he makes it at southampton. Bobby risk leaving Oliech out for your own suspension u saw the speed work he did to open up that zambia defense for olunga to score easily

He only fielded Kenyan boys to do the job which they ddnt. He cldnt score for them period. ingo enda Uvute bangi shimakhokho

I am in Kenya and i have watched Kenyan football for many years. What I saw cannot be the work of a professional coach. There must have been pressure from some quarters to act in some way. Or was it the fear of the wrath of the fans after several mediocre performances in the past? Now just imagine we may never go finals of AFCON

For free, yesterdays match( ON THIS DAY, another day we could talk differently) would have been won by the following easily
Boniface Oluoch David Owino Dennis Odhiambo Harun Shakava Eugene Asike or David Ochieng
Johana Omolo Danson Kago Humphrey Mieno Michael Olunga Eric Johana(or Jesse Were OR Jacob Keli) Ayub Timbe —-BW please wake, don’t for names only.
