Gattuso calls it quits

Finally after weeks of controversy at the club, Gor Mahia’s midfielder Collins Okoth has announced that he has ‘quit Gor Mahia’ with immediate effect.Okoth made the announcement on Thursday morning just a day after turning out for Gor Mahia in a KPL fixture against Mathare United at the City stadium. The match ended 1-1.
In a letter addressed to the club chairman Ambrose Rachier, Okoth through his lawyer said he has made the decision based on previous happenings that have made his tenure at the club uncomfortable and as such hindering his maximum performance.
While speaking to michezoafrika.com on Thursday morning in Nairobi, Okoth said he will wait for expiry of his contract on 26th of June 2012 before knowing his next move but in the mean time he will keep training as he shops around for another club.
“This has been a hard decision for me but I would like to formally announce that I have quit Gor Mahia. As much as it is a hard one to make, my decision is for the sake of both parties since I think my performance will be greatly inhibited by outside factors including incitement from a section of club officials and insiders who seem to be feeding the new coach with a lot of misinformation regarding my commitment to the club.” He said.
“I have tried to give my best to the team that I hold close to my passion but apparently it looks like someone or some people are not happy with my commitment. I have been accused severally of selecting matches to play in and also accused of feigning injuries when it is very clear that doctors including Gor Mahia’s team doctor ruled me out after X-rays on my knee.” He continued.
“ All my troubles started early this year when I did not take a penalty against Tusker, we lost the match but I was labeled indisciplined because I did not take a penalty. How can one be said to be indisciplined because he did not take a penalty on tactical reasons?”
Collins Okoth is expected to deliver his resignation letter to the club chairman later on Thursday afternoon.
Okoth has thanked all those who have supported him while at Gor Mahia saying:
“ Gor Mahia’s fans are phenomenal but there are some who are out to spoil the good name of the team by incitement and underhand back biting that will eventually bring down the team .They should leave the new coach to run the club professionally without outside interference where he will be fed with information to victimize players for past happenings. Let the new coach study the players on his own and make judgment on who is fit to play and who is fit to be dropped when the June transfer window comes. But for me am out of here and I wish my team mates all the best of luck.” He concluded.

  • a club is always bigger than a player ..,we need players with self discpline n’total dedicatioin 2 the club.in 1984, when charcles otieno left gor 4 bururi many fans were devastated but come magongo aka orieko n’ did only fill otieno’s shoes but become a reliable midfield maestro n’ general 4 many years… all the best but in life discpline is a very important virtue.

  • Good riddance Gattuso, hop you will shed off the indiscipline image and cut a clean image of a gud midfielder, just as the one you started before it was marred with cases of indiscipline………….It was nice to have though the timing seems to be wary of the new coach’s comment that some players shouldn’t be in

“Humility is a virue” the Marigas and the Wanyamas are very humble! Thus their continued progress! My friend Gattusso, remember this “The next step forward depends on the foot firmly planted in the past” What is your past? Good player or not, discipline is a must everywhere! Do not hold a misguided feeling of superstardom at this point! No you are not there yet! Bye bye and wish you all the best in future!

You are a good player Mr Gattuso but discipline is a must in any organisation. Humility pays and wherever you go, always uphold it. Best luck.

  • Gattusso, I would have adviced you to prove those saying that you are indeciplined wrong but since you have gone all the best. Remember how many great players have had their careers nipped in the bud due to these vices, Gascoigne and George Best, Tevez are examples. Unfortunately no one told you to leave so the onus will be on you to prove everybody wrong. Most of the prospective suitors know your past so it will require a total shift of character from you wherever you go. Best of wishes and remember not to burn the bridges as you pass since you might need them on your way back.

Gatusso,we will miss your combative and indefatigueable nature of play. You should have held on at Gor to proove your critics wrong. All the best wherever you go but discipline is mandatory if you want to excell as a footballer otherwise at your age that virtue may be your only obstacle to professional football beyond Kenya.

It was long overdue,we cant have players who know no rule of law in the club.we still have numerous players in the midfield who if given chance will perfom much better.

  • Gatusso, that is how you left Tusker. All the best. Let’s meet when you get your new team. Bwana coach, please crack the whip on all players who don’t want to play for Kogalo. Fans always come out to fully support them and it’s time they paid back the support. Please bwana coach, we trust that you can deal with the bad politics in the playing unit.

Collins should be taken through performance counselling. He should identify a mentor.Otherwise he will achieve minimum within the time frame work for this kind of talent.Remember 3 months out is 3 months lost.We do not know but this 3 months can your pick time.

  • I believe this is the time for Viera, Mose Otieno and Peter Juma to shine. I believe they have what it takes to take GM to great heights. Best of wishes to Gattusso in your new destination but ensure that you get rid of this awkward perception

Mr Gattuso .. I have known you close to my chest to be a wonderful, and a player who makes decision imperative of whom it affects. I can’t hide the love I had for you and the hatred you got from me whenever I saw you play my team, INGWE. It clear though that your decisions were personal and you didn’t brush shoulders with your coach leave alone your team mates who can’t add a word to your good profile. Okoth, it is a high time you join a winning side __you are not a looser, your team is a loosing team but thanks that you letbit go.

Motema..these are the players we do need.

Many have said this long time ago that Gatuso was growing horns, it’s good he’s done it by himself. My only advise to him is that if he continues like that wherever he goes then his career is gone. Football comes with professionalism and discipline, Musa Otieno did well in SA and that is why he’s still respected even in the streets of J’burg. Most of the Kogalo old players are coaches today because of what they built yesterday. Gatuso must change his ego and pride to walk well in this career.

Goodbye wuod Ougo we will miss your services in the midfield. Prove the critiques wrong by prospering kama kawaida and if it’s true that you have some discipline issues, then it is high time you drastically change so as to prosper in your soccer career. God bless you
