Gor Mahia 4 City Stars 1

Dan Sserunkuma found the back of the net three times and George Odhiambo “Blackberry” scored his first goal of the season as Gor Mahia destroyed the Nairobi City stars on Saturday.

It is Gor Mahia’s largest win of the season and perhaps the highest number of goals they have scored since beating Anse Re-Union in 2013. Blackberry scoring his first goal left fans elated. But it was not just the goal but the fact that he seems top be regaining his old form thus proving naysayers wrong. Blackberry has found a new lease of life since Frank Nuttall took over as coach.

Dan Sserunkuma just continues to find the net and as mentioned earlier, the most prolific Gor Mahia striker since Hezborn Omollo almost thirty years ago.

On Saturday Gor Mahia started with determination and attacked the City stars goal relentlessly. Blackberry’s effort in the 5th minute hit the cross bar with the City stars keeper well beaten. But it was City stars who found the net first, in the 29th minute, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside. City stars defender Mark Ongwae handled the ball in the 32nd minute but the referee waved play on.

The opening goal came 10 minutes later when Sserunkuma converted a cross from Timothy Otieno. A minute later, Gor Mahia were awarded a penalty which Sserunkuma duly converted. The third goal came almost immediately. It came after a good interplay between Geoffrey Kizito and Godfrey Walusimbi. The latter found Blackberry with a good pass. Odhiambo’s shot bounced off a defender into the net for the third goal. Gor Mahia went into the breather leading 3-0.

City Stars defender Ongwae who was having nightmare evening conceded a penalty when he was judged to have pulled Haron Shakava. Sserunkuma stepped up to slot the penalty in the 56th minute. Nelson Marosowe of City stars was sent off for a second yellow in the 77th minute. City stars will be luck if John Amboko is not suspended for assaulting Haron Shakava. The consolation goal for City Stars finally came in the 82nd minute.

Coach Frank Nuttall was satsified after the game

“We started slowly but picked up towards the end of the first half. We have to keep on till the end,” he said.

City stars coach, Nigerian Robinson Ofwoko blamed the referee for his side’s loss

“We started slowly but picked up towards the end of the first half. We have to keep on till the end,” he said.

All in all, Gor Mahia looked fitter and sharper than  they have recently. Perhaps the week long rest was a factor as was the fact that Nuttall finally had a long stretch in which to install his system.

Gor Mahia have now opened a 5 point lead over Sofapaka who are away to SoNy Sugar on Sunday.

Congrats boys, technical bench under Nuttal, Executive Committee and fans……….Nuttal is a real coach and our game approach has changed since his arrival. Gor Mahia is playing full 90 minutes without any sign of tiredness. Nuttal has so far done a great job by rediscovering of Blackberry and Kevin Oluoch. Something is also happening to Tim Otieno too.

  • Four past city stars, I salute the entire Kogalo fraternity and pray that they don’t relent. I love the positive twist as regards BB and Oluoch. These lads are really impressive, not forgetting Tim Otieno who showed great maturity today. We also have a strong bench now as everyone is improving.
    congrats boys.

    Attaboy “Flava” and team/TB.
These are the expected results against minnows.
Let’s hope for more of such.
I also note that since fans, players (with utmost due respect) & EC have not changed the Nutall factor must be having some good effect.
A result that might GMFC win the TPL & has virtually assured “Flava” the golden boot.
Am keenly keeping an eye on the Nutall factor.

I agree with Michael Odhiambo Ogolo on Arthur Ssemazzi. Disappointing.

Otherwise a good show and I thank God for the win, for the players’ fitness, for Odhis Blackberry’s goal finally and for Sir Bobby’s health. God should indeed be glorified when we see the legend grace the technical bench once again.

@Oduor12 it surely is the Nuttall factor. The guy is on a mission and the boys seem to understand him. I just love the way he has injected self-belief in Odhis Blackberry.

Easy guys on Ssemazzi, it took Blackberry almost three years to score which he did in the yestergame. Overall we are good and we are retaining the Cup given that the other teams are mediocre too.

  • For those who think that the goal that many thought was a dissalowed goal for city stars, I did watch the replay this morning & I can confirm that the goal was scored on an offside position & it is very clear. So there is no question that Gor was favoured. Infact we wud’ve 4 penalties if we wud’ve been awarded accordingly.Even all penalties that we won were genuine ones including the last against Shakava. Take note Matthew otomax bcos I heard u say C/stars were denied a goal in radio jambo.

From the experience of 2012, for those who were already onboard, it’s not over until it’s over. That means that we need to continue winning our matches to be sure of the title irrespective of the results of the other teams

Congrats boys. Kogallo has been, is and ever shall be. My only worry is that “gini wakao kendo”, otherwise am worried about nothing. Accountability, fitness trainer for a tactician, below average players, inept EC are issues that are neither here nor there. I can see some of us getting disappointed here, their noise have been rubbished by results on the field of play. They expected the worst but God is always Great. 2 wins and a draw against Paka and were are there.
For God and my beloved club – Kogallo.

Guys, let’s desist from mentioning players for non performance in bad light just like someone said about a certain player. Let’s encourage them instead. I remember BB being booed and ‘subbed’ by fans a few games ago. See the change now. He didn’t goto train with the U19. Let’s observe some civility as it’s what has brought us this far
