Oktay praises Ze Maria
Gor Mahia coach Hassan Oktay attributes the team’s improved performance after a poor start to the fact that the team has now adjusted to his tactics.
“I put my own philosophy and it has worked and I believe they are going to get better. Even in our first game in our loss against Bandari, I said we going to get better and you can see that happening every day,” Oktay said after the Petro game.
Oktay further thinks that the previous coach Dylan Kerr benefited from the foundation laid by the previous coach Ze Maria.
“At the start of my tenure, they struggled to get what I needed from them. The other coach (Dylan Kerr) had a different philosophy but the Brazilian (Ze Maria) laid the foundation for this group. A little bit of tiki-taka football, slow motion and the other guy (Kerr) who came took the benefit from him but I changed everything from the scratch. ” said Oktay to futaa.com
Oktay says his attention now shifts to the domestic scene
“As a coach, you must strive to win the league first but you can’t ignore the other competitions you are in too. Times it’s hard to balance this because I have to rotate due to the schedule we have. A time you have injuries and you have to force your players to play. Like Muguna (Kenneth) will be out for another week or ten days and I have to find able replacements in his position. It’s my job to do that,”

This issue of Ze Maria always comes up and it seems we are now agreed that he set the standards that we are currently enjoying. But the mother of them all is Siang’a who picked some novices from school and made them stars. The good thing about Kerr is that he knew how to communicate to his charges as well as the EC.
For Oktay he doesn’t seem to be a good communicator, loses his temper easily but could be a good strategist
It is good when a coach acknowledges the input of another. So sad that the beautiful football that Ze Maria cultivated in Gor Mahia just got blown away. The best this guy should have done was to develop Ze Maria’s ‘slow motion tiki taka’ into a faster flowing one: not scrap off everything and “begin from scratch”.
Lokuwam is there alive and well and trains with the team whenever there are training sessions. To him not playing is due to the fact that Oliech…Mustapha…Ssekisambu are all on the bench angling for playing time in the same very position so he gets overlooked often. Today against Kenpply would be an ideal game for him to get playing time…
The type of football Ze Maria intended to play is the kind that requires artistes , raw natural flair , instinct and players who just love playing football and would have required close to two or three transfer windows to accomplish , tough ask of the EC but that is what bold progressive leadership is all about .
There are two distinct types of footballers in this world , there are the natural , instinctive, reflexive ball loving players like Lionel Messi and then there are the blood , sweat and tears players like Ronaldo , Now Messi is the equivalent of a student who in a prep time of 4hrs only requires 30minutes to get 90% , Ronald is the type to extend the 4hrs by 3more hours to get the same 90% , the Lionels love football , play for fun and earn from it , the Ronaldo’s sole purpose of playing football is to escape poverty .
Players like Ronaldo fit into any formation bcoz their outputs depend on the coach , on the other hand Messi or Ronaldino themselves are the formation and hence the team is built around them .
Back to Ze Maria , it was always going to be a steep climb , trying to do what he intended with players that were not Messi type but were Ronaldo type running away from poverty but with a reluctance for the blood , sweat and tears , the latter , with the exception of maybe Kahata is what we have in the team , Tuisenge just like Kagere b4 him , is the true epitome of Ronaldo-isque , blood , sweat and tears , the rest are just journeymen , talent without ambition .
Back to James Sian’ga , now this is the only guy in recent history to have done what Gor has always done , when it was at its most successful , what let Sian’ga down was that unlike in the past , there were no star veterans to welcome and nature the youngsters , but it was a system that could have been retained by successive coaches for a predictable and sustainable recruiting infrastructure BUT the brokers won .
Sian’ga example is a confirmation that players are still available from whence we got them in the past , better than the kageres or tuisenges albeit lazier and unfocussed .
The future of Gor , is just to go back to the basics , go back to where we used to get players from , get back to our football philosophy , get a coach who can coach that philosophy and give him a suitable time frame to implement it , ofcourse with short and midterm goals to achieve , the fans must be sold on this plan and time frames , but above all and most importantly learn how to sniff a wash wash guy before they approach any of our positions of leadership , apart from promising with “Brilliant Blueprints ” , this time some will even promise to raise from the dead our heroes who are peacefully resting in peace .
Finally , apart from the results , am yet to see any of Oktay’s footprints on the pitch , all I have seen so far are kick na tuku tane mbele pasipojaliwa mwenyezi mungu , and I challenge anybody to tell me what known football formation we are playing , but for the results , am willing to give him more time
Lokowum currently has his plsy time in the junior team as you all know that the current rules allow 5 of the academy players to be able to play for the senior team. Anybody who watched our game against the Cameroun team will aknowledge that when are not under pressure we can really play entertaining football and with results. Whoever watched the Petro team will realize what a good coach they had. Even when trailing but with numerical advantage he discouraged the team from playing long balls and always urged them to cool down. Not with Oktay.
Agree….Oktay is beginning to talk toooo much, spitting venom everywhere he wishes to.Mouth control is a prerequisite skillset for any successful football coach. Let someone remind him that in Gor, venom is spit after winning trophies. Where are the trophies to back his audacious everyday rants, warnings and requests ? @Dan Original do you believe Hashim Sempala who has never been called or been on uganda cranes radar warrants a foreign quota slot in GM? He is effetive but average just like many other hardworking DMF’s locally but atleast he has a high degree of self discipline and motivation. He is a Nigerian young wide player or winger (wide striker in a 4-3-3 formation) who can ply both flanks with terrific speed and cutting in ability while releasing hard shots whenever line of sight presents itself…
The only player that I would wish to be signed to play for chuor timbe is Denis odhiambo, but I know that kalekwa will never sell his best player to Gor mahia fc
Jasego , I think the reason Sempala has not received a call up maybe is because the Cranes have a multitude of slightly better options in that area. Sempala may not be exceptional but ranks among the best DMFs in the local league perhaps tying at par with Dennis Odhiambo and Sven Yidah. Secondly, national team call up while a very good reference point can be misleading. Mustafa and Ssekisambu have national team caps but cannot nail starting berths in Gor Mahia. Finally, Gor has a way of bringing the best out of players who may have been considered surplus elsewhere(particularly ex-Tusker players) Aucho, Mieno, Abondo, Olunga, Bonny all released by Tusker either for being too old or for non-performance then becoming hits on joining Gor. If we cannot get Saprong or Mensah or Yidah or Dennis, Sempala is out next best bet.

Can someone please shade some light on the issue of tabling standings in group D. CAF online table standings indicates that Gor Mahia tops Zamalek and not vice versa. Could the reasoning be that K’Ogalo won 3 while Zamalek only 2 matches respectively and therefore goal difference or head to head does not apply accordingly.
That is interesting, my be just as in Olympics anyone with a gold medal can never be behind whatever number of silver medals. But also good so that we are seeded and meet teams we cannot even pronounce their names

I don’t understand why we are killing Oktay. What’s this talk about tactical formations. The games we played against Zamalek and Na Hussein Dey at Kasarani were results of a thorough coach. What of the derby with Ingwe. Was he as poor as we are trying to portray? Maybe our memory goes as far as the last game.
We must remember that the players have been travelling, boycotting training, sulking over bonuses and pay and finally playing league matches midweek matches fixed by Oguda when we have continentals to prepare for. On a scale of 1-10 i will give Oktay 9.

I feel that up to where we have reached in this tournament , coupled with what and who we have gone through , I think its now time to give it to ourself some very big measure of respect and appreciate that no team , including the Northerners derive any pleasure in meeting us , We have nothing more to proove to nobody , but above all , we know where our weaknesses lie and that is in away games , and not only to the North .
